Recently, 5-year-old Ming Ming came to the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine for further consultation. It took half a year, and his left leg finally recovered, and he could walk as freely as other children... Mingming's parents firmly held the hand of Deputy Chief physician Gong Zhixian, and thanked him for his help at the critical moment.

Before the Spring Festival in 2023, Gong Zhixian, deputy chief physician of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department of Affiliated First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Traditional Chinese Medicine, had just returned to his hometown Yiyang for the Spring Festival, and a fellow villager came to seek help.

It turned out that when the villager was riding a motorcycle with his 5-year-old son Mingming in the morning, the child accidentally fell off the back seat of the motorcycle and completely broke his left thigh and leg bone. After an examination by a local hospital doctor, it was stated that the child needs to be hospitalized for surgical treatment, and the steel plate can only be removed after one year, with a treatment cost of nearly 40000 yuan. The villagers are struggling to make ends meet with medical expenses, and it is also the Chinese New Year. The local hospital is also unable to undergo surgery immediately, so the villagers have to take their children back home first.

Upon hearing this, Gong Zhixian hurriedly went to his hometown. Due to pain, the child kept crying and his left thigh had swollen to twice the size of his normal right thigh. Gong Zhixian quickly examined the nerves and blood vessels of the child's injured limb, and then gently felt the location of the fracture with his thumb and abdomen. He identified the direction of displacement and the degree of flipping and rotation. Through X-ray, it was confirmed that the child's femur was completely misaligned and angled.

After preliminary communication with the child's parents, Gong Zhixian decided to assist the child in manual reduction and then use splints to fix it to promote recovery. Due to a lack of medical materials, Gong Zhixian could only use local materials. He cut the cedar bark into four pieces of suitable size and squareness, and then tied the medical gauze he brought with him to form a fixed splint.

After the production of the splint was completed, Gong Zhixian asked the child's parents to fix the child's body, grip the child's left thigh on their own, and perform the reduction. The entire process was fast, accurate, and ruthless, and the fracture reduction was completed in less than 20 seconds. Subsequently, Gong Zhixian fixed the handmade splint on the child's leg bone, adjusted it to a suitable position, maintained moderate tightness, and comforted the child.

During the Chinese New Year, Gong Zhixian couldn't rest assured of his injured child and went to check his condition every day. Before returning to Changsha, parents were specifically instructed that the child must be fully rested in bed and not allowed to stand and bear weight. It was agreed that after returning to Changsha, the child would undergo weekly online follow-up checks. After 2-3 weeks, the swelling in the child's left leg gradually subsided. If there are any special circumstances, they must contact themselves as soon as possible.

X-ray film after one month of manual reduction

One month later, the X-ray film of the child's left leg showed that the previously completely severed and misaligned left thigh bone had been basically restored, leaving only about 10 millimeters of shortened displacement.

In March this year, the child came to the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine for reexamination. In addition to walking, he also had some lameness, and the child has basically recovered. Recently, when the child came for a follow-up examination, he was able to run and jump, and walked without limping, fully recovering.

The child's family is deeply grateful to Dr. Gong Zhixian for his meticulous treatment over the past six months. Thanks to Dr. Gong's assistance, the child was able to move freely. Gong Zhixian stated that traditional Chinese medicine bone setting techniques have obvious advantages in treating fractures, such as less pain, fast healing, and good functional recovery. They can adjust their activities according to the degree of limb swelling to achieve the best functional reduction effect. They will also do their best to inherit and promote traditional Chinese medicine and serve the people.
