The pursuit of longevity is an elusive quest, often elusive to those who seek it most. However, for those who embrace life without expectations, this elusive prize may come knocking. This article explores the life of Gong Laifa, China's "Longevity King," who lived an astonishing 133 years.

The Early Years

Born in 1862 in the Mantian Town of Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County, Guizhou Province, Gong Laifa came from humble beginnings. His birth parents, unable to provide for him, gave him up to Xiang Laier of the Da Ling Gang. Xiang and his wife raised Gong as their own, giving him a loving and nurturing environment.

Fate struck again when Gong was 10 years old. Xiang Laier and his wife passed away, leaving Gong orphaned once more. With no one to care for him, he became a wandering "wild child," surviving on fruits and vegetables in the forest and sleeping in caves or under trees.

A New Home

After four years of living in the wilderness, Gong's life took another turn. At age 14, he met Xiang Liquan of Daban Ling, who needed help with his farm. Xiang invited Gong to work for him, and Gong became a valued member of the Xiang household.

Xiang Liquan recognized Gong's hard work and loyalty. As Xiang grew older, he believed that Gong brought good fortune to his family. On his deathbed, Xiang left instructions to care for Gong and provide for his well-being.

A Life of Simplicity

For the next century, Gong lived with the Xiang family, witnessing seven generations of their descendants. He continued to work on the farm, singing folk songs as he tended the fields.

Gong's living environment was tranquil. His village was surrounded by lush forests, and bamboo groves filled the homes of its residents. Gong maintained a simple diet, consisting mostly of coarse grains and sorghum.

The Longevity King

Despite his advanced age, Gong never married. He lived a solitary life, abstaining from alcohol and seldom experiencing illness. He also refused to take medication when he did get sick.

In 1993, Gong Laifa's remarkable longevity came to national attention. At the age of 131, he was recognized as China's Longevity King at an event organized by the Chinese Committee on Aging and the 93 All-Love Seniors Action Committee.

During the event, Gong shared his simple secrets to longevity: physical activity through farming, a diet of coarse grains, maintaining a positive outlook on life, and avoiding major worries. He also admitted to his lifelong indulgence in "unhealthy" tobacco smoking.

Fame and Recognition

Gong's fame spread far and wide. He was invited to become an honorary director of the Yichun Tea Factory in Suning County, Hebei Province, with a lifetime pension of 200 yuan per month. The State-owned Liquor Factory in Wuchuan County also offered him a similar position.

Gong was overwhelmed with gratitude for the recognition and support he received. He expressed his appreciation for the kindness of the Communist Party, saying, "I have lived through several dynasties, and none has been as good as this."

The Twilight Years

Despite his seemingly robust health, the inevitable effects of time took their toll on Gong's body. His height dwindled to 140 centimeters, and his weight dropped to 30 kilograms.

In 1995, at the age of 133, Gong Laifa passed away peacefully in his home. He had contracted hepatitis, a testament to the eventual decline of his body.

Legacy

People from all walks of life mourned Gong's passing. His kindness and amiable nature had won the hearts of his community.

Gong Laifa's life is both a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a reminder of the elusive nature of longevity. While some may seek secrets to extending their lifespan, Gong's story suggests that a simple life filled with purpose, contentment, and a touch of "unhealthiness" may hold the key to a long and fulfilling life.
