Farewell in the Sunshine: A Story of Health and Love
Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains and landed on Wang Lin's face. She opened her eyes and looked at the alarm clock on the bedside table. It was only 5:30. "Another beautiful day," Wang Lin murmured softly, carefully getting out of bed, afraid of waking her husband Wang Hang who was still asleep beside her.
Wang Lin, 53 years old, was a retired teacher. She and Wang Hang had been married for 30 years and they had a grown-up daughter. This ordinary, well-off family had always lived a healthy and disciplined life because of Wang Lin's insistence. "Honey, I'm going for my morning exercise," Wang Lin said softly to Wang Hang, who was still in bed, as she put on her sportswear. Wang Hang mumbled in his sleep, "Yeah, be careful."
Wang Lin arrived at the park near her apartment complex and saw her neighbors who often exercised together. "Wang Lin, you're here!" Li, the lady, greeted her with a smile. "Here I am, the weather is so nice today." Wang Lin joined the group with a smile and began her daily Tai Chi exercise routine.
After Tai Chi, Wang Lin went to the market with her neighbors. She carefully picked out fresh vegetables and fruits, already planning the menu for the day in her mind: steamed perch, stir-fried greens, tomato egg soup all light and healthy home-cooked meals.
When she got back home, Wang Hang had just woken up. Seeing his wife carrying a load of groceries, he quickly stepped forward to help. "You bought so much?" Wang Hang asked, laughing. "Eating more fruits and vegetables is good for your health, you should eat less greasy food too," Wang Lin said. Suddenly, she felt a wave of fatigue and had to hold her forehead. Wang Hang asked with concern, "What's wrong? Are you too tired?" Wang Lin shook her head, "It's okay, maybe the changing weather, I'll be fine after a rest."
However, this fatigue became increasingly frequent. Sometimes Wang Lin even felt a dull ache in her abdomen, but she always reassured herself that it was probably just the effects of menopause.
One evening, Wang Hang saw his wife's haggard face and couldn't help but say, "Honey, how about we go to the hospital for a comprehensive checkup?" Wang Lin waved her hand with a smile, "Why bother, I'm so health-conscious, there couldn't be anything major wrong." Wang Hang hesitated, but ultimately didn't insist.
Until that fateful morning, Wang Lin went to the park for her morning exercise as usual. Suddenly, a sharp pain in her abdomen struck her, she bent down, her face pale. "Wang Lin! Wang Lin, what's wrong?" Li, the lady, exclaimed in panic. "Quick! Call Wang Hang!" Another neighbor immediately took out her phone. Wang Lin wanted to speak, but the pain made her speechless. A sudden wave of fear surged through her heart: Could it be that something was really wrong with her body?
In the hospital corridor, Wang Hang paced anxiously. Just now, he had witnessed his wife Wang Lin being wheeled into the examination room. Recalling the harrowing scene in the park that morning, Wang Hang's heart was filled with unease. "Mr. Wang?" A gentle voice interrupted Wang Hang's thoughts. He looked up and saw a middle-aged man in a white coat walking towards him. "I'm Dr. Liu, I'm responsible for Mrs. Wang's examination. Could I have a word with you?" Dr. Liu said softly.
Wang Hang nodded and followed Dr. Liu into a small consultation room. Dr. Liu motioned for him to sit down, then took out a stack of examination reports. "Mr. Wang, we have done a comprehensive examination of Mrs. Wang." Dr. Liu paused, his expression grave. "Preliminary results show that Mrs. Wang may have pancreatic cancer."
Those words were like a bolt from the blue. Wang Hang felt dizzy for a moment. "No, that's impossible!" He blurted out subconsciously. "My wife has always been so health-conscious, how could she have cancer?"
Dr. Liu nodded understandingly, "I know this news is hard to accept. However, pancreatic cancer has complex causes, it can't be completely avoided even with good lifestyle habits. I suggest we do further examinations to confirm the diagnosis."
Just then, a nurse wheeled Wang Lin out of the examination room. Seeing her husband and the doctors expressions, Wang Lin sensed something was wrong. "Wang Hang, doctor, what's going on?" she asked tremblingly.
Wang Hang forced back his tears and held Wang Lin's hand. Dr. Liu softly explained the preliminary diagnosis to Wang Lin. "No, that's impossible!" Wang Lin exclaimed excitedly. "I've always paid attention to my diet and exercised every day, how could I have pancreatic cancer?"
Dr. Liu patiently explained, "Mrs. Wang, I understand how you feel. However, we need to do more detailed examinations to confirm the diagnosis."
Over the next few days, Wang Lin underwent a series of complex examinations. Each time she waited for the results, it was a torment for the couple. Finally, on a sunny afternoon, Dr. Liu summoned Wang Lin and Wang Hang again. "I'm sorry," Dr. Liu said in a low voice, "the confirmed results show that Mrs. Wang does have late-stage pancreatic cancer, and it has spread to surrounding tissues."
Wang Lin burst into tears immediately, Wang Hang hugged his wife tightly, and the two embraced and wept. "What should we do?" Wang Hang asked, his voice choked with emotion.
"I recommend starting chemotherapy and radiation immediately," Dr. Liu said. "Although the situation is not optimistic, we will do our best to treat it."
The following days were a nightmare for Wang Lin. The side effects of chemotherapy made her suffer terribly. She vomited constantly and had no appetite. Her weight plummeted, and her once rosy cheeks became sallow and haggard.
Wang Hang took a leave of absence from work and stayed by his wife's side day and night. Whenever Wang Lin felt desperate because of the pain, he would softly comfort her, "Honey, let's work together, we will surely overcome this disease."
One day, Wang Hang secretly played one of Wang Lin's favorite old songs. The familiar melody played, and Wang Lin opened her weak eyes, a faint smile forming on her lips. "Thank you, Wang Hang." Wang Lin said softly.
However, despite the best efforts of Wang Lin and her family, her condition did not improve. After a routine examination, Dr. Liu called Wang Hang to his office. "Mr. Wang," Dr. Liu said heavily, "I'm sorry, the treatment is not as effective as we expected. The cancer is continuing to spread."
Wang Hang was struck by lightning. His legs went weak, and he collapsed onto the chair. He forced back his grief and asked in a trembling voice, "How much time do we have left?"
Dr. Liu shook his head gently, "It's hard to say, maybe just a few months."
Wang Hang took a deep breath and stood up. "Thank you, doctor. Please don't tell my wife yet, I want her to keep her hope and fighting spirit."
As he walked out of the office, Wang Hang's tears finally burst forth. He knew that the days ahead would be a difficult battle, but he decided to accompany his wife on her final journey and give her the warmest love and care.
Time slipped away like sand through an hourglass, Wang Lin's condition worsened every day. In the ward, Wang Hang stayed by his wife's side, watching her increasingly gaunt face, his heart breaking. "Wang Hang," Wang Lin opened her weak eyes, her voice almost inaudible, "I want to look out the window."
Wang Hang immediately got up, gently helped his wife sit up, adjusted the bed, so that she could see the view outside the window. The sun shone gently on Wang Lin's pale face, and a glimmer of light flashed in her eyes. "It's so beautiful," Wang Lin whispered, "Just like the day we first went on a date."
Wang Hang held his wife's hand tightly, forcing back his tears. "Yes, the sun was shining that day too."
Wang Lin smiled, her gaze deepening. "I always thought I was healthy...I didn't expect..." Her voice gradually faded.
Wang Hang stroked his wife's cheek, "You've done a great job, don't blame yourself."
Wang Lin closed her eyes and nodded gently. A moment later, she opened her eyes again, her gaze becoming firm. "Wang Hang, promise me you'll take good care of yourself."
Wang Hang choked back a sob and nodded, "I promise you, Wang Lin, you have to be strong too, we'll work together."
However, the tide of life could not be stopped after all. One quiet afternoon, Wang Lin closed her eyes peacefully and left forever. In the ward, only Wang Hang's silent sobs remained.
Wang Lin's passing was a huge blow to her family. In the days after the funeral, Wang Hang was like a walking corpse, immersed in grief and confusion. He kept replaying
